OptiLut for Eye Health: The Benefits and Dosage Information

Lutein is a well-known antioxidant compound known to support eye health. OptiLut is a 100% natural lutein concentrate from marigold flowers and provides optimal eye support.

Lutein, along with another antioxidant zeaxanthin, are major components of the retina, which is responsible for clear vision. OptiLut has been found to help to minimize the long term vision deterioration by ensuring that your retina has enough of these essential antioxidants.

Antioxidants for Eye Health

Lutein and zeaxanthin are two of the most abundant carotenoids found in the body, and they are concentrated mostly in the retina. Both compounds work to reduce UV damage to the epithelial cells in the eye lens.

Lutein, in particular, has been found to act as a highly effective filter of blue light, which is one of the most common sources of oxidative stress on eyes today. As antioxidants, lutein, and zeaxanthin scavenge oxidative free radicals, protecting cells from damage and deterioration.

Lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin are carotenoids that cannot be converted into vitamin A. They are similar to other carotenoids in that they are both fat-soluble and the body is unable to produce them.

It is necessary to get these powerful antioxidants from diet or supplementation. Unlike lutein and zeaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin is found only on the macula and is produced in the retina through the isomerization of lutein.

OptiLut provides a protective dose of lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. Although other carotenoids can also protect the eye and boost eye health, these are the only three that directly deposit onto the macula. Since most damage from blue light occurs in the macula, the direct deposit provides the most effective benefits.

The Benefits of OptiLut

OptiLut provides lutein and zeaxanthin (and meso-zeaxanthin, once it converts from lutein) to serve as antioxidant protectors of the eye. The retina is the most metabolically active tissue in the eye and the entire body, and this high metabolism produces a large amount of potentially damaging oxidative free radicals.

The lutein and zeaxanthin protect the eye from oxidative damage by scavenging these harmful species and by targeting the oxidative stress-induced damage caused by blue light.

These carotenoid pigments protect the retina by absorbing any blue light, preventing it from reaching and damaging the underlying photoreceptor cells. Blue light damage is more common today as a result of the increased use of technology. It is primarily emitted into the environment from televisions, smartphones, computer screens, and other forms of artificial lighting.

Lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin within the retina are measured as macular pigment optical density (MOPD). The thickness of this pigment varies from person to person and is what provides protection from harmful light.

A thicker macular pigment will mean better protection from the environment and less risk for macular degeneration. The risk for macular degeneration naturally increases with age, but OptiLut can prevent this by maintaining a thicker macular pigment in the eyes.

In addition to maintaining the macula pigment, lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin can protect the eye from deterioration and disease in several ways. Each carotenoid on their own is beneficial, but the combination provided with OptiLut is more effective in reducing free radical damage than only one of them at the same total concentration.

Studies also found that along with protective qualities, taking OptiLut daily can improve night vision and visual acuity on eye chart tests.

In an Italian study, individuals with age-related macular degeneration were treated with lutein and zeaxanthin supplements. These supplements were added to an omega-3 treatment program to further reduce the risk of macular degeneration. While the risk of developing the condition was not reduced, those who already had signs of macular degeneration reported a slowing in the progression of the disease

Additional Benefits of OptiLut

Lutein is a powerful antioxidant that is known to help protect your eyes, but as the largest component of the OptiLut supplement, it can provide additional benefits too.

Lutein has also been found to protect against the buildup of plaques in the arteries that protect your heart, which is a condition known as atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is one of the most common risk factors of heart disease and stroke, so OptiLut can help protect your heart along with your eyes.

Antioxidants can protect every cell in your body from free radical damage. Beyond the heart, antioxidants help protect your skin too. Your skin, like your eyes, is exposed to environmental factors that increase oxidative damage, and lutein can protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Taking OptiLut

OptiLut has been approved as safe for human use, and it is recommended to take one capsule daily. With each capsule, you get 20mg of lutein and 10mg of zeaxanthin. Once it reaches the retinas, some of the lutein will be converted into meso-zeaxanthin, and your eyes will have the protection they need.

There have not been serious side effects reported with the use of OptiLut, but there have been cases where too much lutein can cause upset stomach, muscle weakness, and confusion. Always consult your doctor before starting a supplement, and if you experience any side effects, it’s important to bring them to your doctor’s attention immediately. You also need to consult your doctor if you currently take any prescription medications.

The Bottom Line

The aging process inevitably brings with it certain forms of degeneration, and the eyes are commonly affected by this. As a result of high metabolic activity within the eyes, there is increased exposure to free radicals.

Supplements containing lutein and zeaxanthin, such as OptiLut, can help protect the eyes from oxidative damage and reduce the risk of age-related vision degeneration.
